Mr. Willard "Dock” Matthews Obituary

What a solemn day it is to announce that God’s role model of a man has crossed the swelling tide.  Mr. Willard Matthews, affectionately known by everyone as “Dock”, stood on the banks of Jordan Wednesday night at Kitty Askins Hospice Center and saw the Ship of Zion come sail by.  Although our precious family was at his bedside, once he looked up and saw it was Jesus himself was the captain of the ship, he quietly tiptoed out of the room and stepped onboard.

On the crisp winter evening of January 28, 2020 between the hours of 6pm and 8pm our gentle giant, Dock Matthews will lie in peaceful repose in the sanctuary of Woods Chapel Freewill Baptist Church located at 928 E. New Hope Rd. in Goldsboro, NC for a time of visitation.  During these tender moments, family and friends may gather and reminisce on yester-years with Dock, as those left to continue his rich legacy will be present to receive guests from 7pm until 8pm.

The Triumphant “Until We Meet Again” Services will climax on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 with an intimate ceremony at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery located at 164 Longs Plant Farm Rd. in Goldsboro, NC commencing at 12noon. The United States Army Honor Guard will salute this veteran along with his loving and devoted wife during this service. The late Rev. F.C. Barnes in whom Dock loved, said it best when he put pen to parchment and wrote these Lord-like lyrics: “I’m coming up on the rough side of the mountain.....and I’m doing my best to make it in.”  Well on Wednesday evening while his wife, children and grandchildren were at his bedside, he made it to the top of that mountain.....and God has given us comfort knowing.....HE MADE IT IN.

In addition to Tuesday at the church, guests are being received at the residence located at 205 Graham St. Goldsboro, NC where all will assemble in preparation for the Prestigious Majestic Ebony Motorcade.
