Our loving arms of compassion are wrapped around the heartbroken shoulders of the family of Ms. Margaret Smith. Ms. Smith answered the Master's Call on Sunday afternoon at Elizabethtown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. 

​Margaret Evelyn Smith, born May 29, 1950, in Maryville, TN, left this earthly world September 17, 2017.

Margaret lived most of her first 7 years in Brazil, where her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. James Hoge Smith, Jr. (Edna Louise Russell) were serving as Presbyterian missionaries. She attended school in Brazil; Richmond, VA (briefly); St. Petersburg, FL; Farmville, VA; and graduated from high school in Covington, VA. She was a graduate of Madison State Teachers’ College (now JMU) in Harrisonburg, VA, and taught school for one year. She then joined Best Products, for which she worked 16 years, attaining the position of Regional Human Resources Manager, moving back and forth across the country and places in between almost every year. After leaving the company and taking a break to travel and help a friend, she lived in various cities of central Virginia, working mostly in temporary services, including Kelly Services. Her last and favorite position was with Interpretive Simulations of Charlottesville, VA.

Never married, she was a loving and devoted daughter to her parents, sister to her siblings, niece to her aunts, and she doted on her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and by a nephew, Langdon Smith. She is survived by two brothers: Jim Smith (and wife Meg), of Glenside, PA; and Ed Smith, of Florence, SC; and sister Ginnie Reinhold (and husband Bill), of Elizabethtown, NC; also, sister-in-law Sandra Smith, of Florence, SC; 2 nephews, 4 nieces that include Margaret Furr (husband Wesley) of Bridgewater, VA, and 6 great-nieces and -nephews.

Family services will be in Virginia at a later time. Margaret’s family are deeply appreciative of care received at Elizabethtown Nursing Center and with Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Memorial gifts, if so desired in lieu of flowers, may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice (1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401) or church or charity of one’s choice, including in support of brain cancer or cancer in general.
